Colour Studies in a sketchbook
Thinking about Colour Studies in a sketchbook, this one:
Two weeks ago on my art journal check in for week 4 here at the blog which means this week it is already week 6 of this year. I have been really creative taking photos and teaching my first class. And also playing a bit in the sketchbook that I created for the class. The spiral bound brown paper sketchbook.
I’ve decided to call it Colour Studies; the sketchbook and the experiments going on it it. All inspired by Jane Davies and the way she named her drawings “colour studies”. My sketchbook has white drawing paper with deckled edges and bird end-papers that makes me happy.
I’ve always loved colours, and I am very inspired by colour. Since reading Julia Caprara’s book I’ve been more aware of my own use of colours, how I combine them and am drawn to them. I’ve also collected a lot of pink in my exploring pink sketchbook.
In this sketchbook, I’m exploring color even more. In Colour Studie #1 I used oil pastels, and smudged them together to create a blended effect.
Colour Studie #1: pink, orange and yellow; what a beautiful sunrisey combination!
I am experimenting with the material, this is oil pastel crayons. I haven’t used them in a long time, but I really like how they look when smudged together. I use my fingers to smear the crayon colour around on the paper, letting the colours mix.
Colour studie #2: green and yellow, with a lot of charcoal pencil too.
Darker and more mysterious. Like a forest at dawn, with the red sun shining through the leaf…
I was thinking that this book would only bee oil pastel experiments, but after two pages I was eager once again for a collage… So a collaged page it was!
Though strips of coloured paper (magazine page, tissue paper, my painted papers + transparent washi tape) is like painting with colour too. I added a parrot owl too, just because he was on my desk and wanted to find a home. He is home now.
What experiments have you been up to this week?
Love the owl as I love owls! I have been finishing some canvases so I can make more with ideas in my head. I keep putting extra paint in my journals while I am at it so it looks like I am accomplishing a lot. :)
This book is just delicious! Such wonderful colors and designs! Not been experimenting to much this week, hopefully get to do some next week!

I love these pages! They are very inspiring. I have been using a lot of graphite this week but I’m itching to work in my art journal to play with color and paint.
Hi Hanna…I got out my oil pastels this past week…the first time in a long time. I experimented with collage (putting two magazine pics together) this week. I always enjoy your colorful pages. I also enjoyed looking at your workshop photos…it looks as if all of you had a great time creating books.

Hi Hanna! Such gorgeous splashes of colour; I love them both! And, I know what you mean about the collage part; it’s just too much fun. I think I am going to get out my own pastels today and just do a bit of play. Thanks, as always, for the lovely bits of eye candy and the inspiration.
Oh this is a lovely, lovely book! I’m guessing it probably just feels good in your hands, am I right? Love that bulky paper…and your page with the pinks/oranges/yellows is yummy!
I do most of my creating on weekends, so I haven’t been experimenting until today. I’m drawing and painting faces, which is new to me! I found a grate tutorial by Milliande, and followed that. And you know what, I like my first face drawing/painting! Next week I’m planning on experimenting with making fridge magnets, after finding your tutorial from way back yesterday :)
