Finally I knit a pair of Fingerless Mittens

We interrupt the 2008 Craft Report stream with a pair of mittens. Next is part III which I think will be the last part in the series, and it will be about diary keeping, writing and being published. But now, as they say, for something very different. My first pair of knitted mittens!
They were finished in December 2008 so actually they belong in the Report, but haven’t been blogged yet! And they are for me highly associated with the concept of “for the first time”, as they are my first mittens after a couple of years of sock making. I can’t believe I haven’t made a pair for myself until now, I have been wanting to for so long.
I’ve been wanting to knit elaborate patterned mittens for months now but didn’t and/or couldn’t. Couldn’t find the right yarn. Didn’t want to buy more yarn when I have so much already that I don’t know what to do with… Couldn’t decide on a pattern. Couldn’t understand the pattern I choose. Didn’t start because I couldn’t fin the right time to cast on. Didn’t think I could understand the chart well enough to start. And so on. But wanted to have a pair of handmade mittens all the time during this mostly unconscious “thinking”.
So finally this winter I picked up a very easy pattern in Swedish, Ilsefins vantar, and wool I had in my drawer of yarn. The white wool comes from one of my friend Marika’s goodie bags, the green I have no idea where it originates from. They are not spun in the same way but they work together, so I thought “what the heck”. Plus I had the two skeins I needed to cast on. The white run out before the stripes did but I fixed that with a large green streak around the fingers.

I finished these just before Christmas, and now I use them every day because after New Year’s Eve it’s been very cold in Sweden.

Congratulations on your mittens. I’ve also been wanting to knit some patterned mittens for a long time and not doing it. I’m hoping to make some really cosy thrummed mittens this year sometime.
