Paint with a Plastic Card

My scraping card

The card I use when I scrape paint is a my old student card, but it is hardly visible behind all that paint. I’ve been using it for a few years now. I love using this method! It is one of my favorite ways to make backgrounds and art journal pages (and to use a spray water bottle).

To spread acrylic paint on paper with a plastic card is fun and exiting. It is quite a lot quicker than painting with a paintbrush, and the paint also dries faster because you can spread it out in thin layers.

Scraping progress 1

I started with bright pink and orange on the right side, and then light blue and black to the left. The black and blue then spread to the right page too, to unite the two pages. Here is the page a few scrapes later;

When the paint had dried a bit I continued to add more colours. Titanium buff (a skin tone kind of colour) and patches of gold transformed the page into something new and different. I was so happy with this spread I stopped there.

Painting with a plastic card – Crusade #44

This post is a part of September Crusade In a scrape, where we explore applying paint using an old credit card or flat edged tool.

In this crusade we are asked to explore the grungy and textured possibilities we can achieve by layering paint. I wanted to make a grungy page but then I ended up with quite a smooth one. Sometimes that happens, or rather, I always end up with something of a surprise. No matter what I set out to do the page I get something slightly different. I totally embrace the unknown when I create in my art journal!

A grungy page,
inspired by Michelle Ward, can be seen in my post Smuding, scraping and scratching up art from last year. Black and white grunge for sure! With scrape painting you can also play with stencils etc, like we did when we were braving the elements; check my post out to see what I did then.

Here is a close-up of all that colour joy;

Teaching online

Connie of Dirty Footprints Studio is revealing a secret on her blog today, or rather, a secret about 21 secrets… She is very excited and so am I, because this is a project that I am involved in! It is a online art journal workshop coming to you this October! The class will have 21 lessons/techniques being taught by 21 different teachers using images, text, pdf:s and of course video! One of the teachers will be me! OMG! If you buy the class from my site once it is released, which I hope you will (it is going to be so fun!), I get a percentage of that money and you will get all the lessons and make me very grateful to you. I will write more about this soon, and share the process of making videos (!) and being apart of this project!

Curious about the workshop? Read Connie’s announcement and see what you will get and from whom at the 21 secrets page! Registration begins Monday, September 20, 2010 and The Playground officially opens on Friday, October 1st!

BTW, I decided to try to do a gel medium transfer onto the page, this is how I left it over night to dry better;

I will show you how it came out tomorrow.

  3. Jean, thanks for commenting! I love combining colours and painting, I think the card scraping kind of lends itself to combining colours in unusual ways… :-)

  4. I’d love to do the classes, but I’m not sure how it works. Do I have to be at the computer at a set time to take the class?? I’d be happy to sign on if I don’t need to be at my computer at a specific time. My schedule is so erratic. Let me know!

  5. I love scraping! And I just read some inspiring bits about scraping paint in L.K. Ludwig’s new book Creative Wildfire. I also am gearing up to do Michelle’s crusade, and hope to have time for it this weekend.

    Your pages are SO beautiful. I think they look like you. I love that plastic card, too.
    I bet your classe is so cool. I’ll see what I can do about getting it!

  6. That’s great! I love painting with card too.
    Your page is really nice.

    Thanks a lot for your answer about acrylics on fabric. I will try!
    I tried transfert but I was not successful…

    Have a good evening!

  7. Thanks for all your lovely comments!

    Baye, an online class is like a homepage where you log in at your own convenience and any time during the two months it will be available! It’s easy, fun and a great way to expand and get a push to learn new things and meet new people! I will post on my blog when you can register (will be next Monday) and then it will start in October. I will be happy to help if you have any further questions!

  8. Hey Hanna! I love your pages, they are so vibrant and pop! I can’t wait to see how the gel medium transfer turns out.

  9. I LOVE your pages….. the colour combinations are so happy! I love that you have used the same credit card for years!!!!

    Your blog is fantastic!!!!! I’d be really interested in the online class. What would be required computer wise? I am not great with technology! I have a laptop with Windows 7!

  10. Thanks for your enthusiasm Missyk! :-) I have several cards, hehe, but they are all getting to look like that, very “used”. :-)
    About the class, you don’t need anything special of fancy. If you can watch video and download pdf:s to your computer from your browser you will be all set to learn, journal and have fun! :-)

    Take care!

  11. hanna – thanks for revisiting your scraped pages to share with the team. it’s always a joy to see your vibrant colors. love the close-up of the card! i often retire a card after several pages because it is just so fabulous – crusty layers of evidence…i tuck it in an envelope or staple right onto a page.

    congrats on the collaborative class! wishing you much success.

  12. Your scraped pages are incredible. I was just at Jean’s site and love what you did and love what she did…and they are so different! I primarily make repurposed jewelry but I have done a couple of collage classes and hope to do Jean’s background class when life gets back to normal! I am also going to run over and see that journaling class. Looks fantastic!

  13. Thanks Hanna! That really means alot. I do love my new banner, I just put it up. I love it because other than a crop job and some tweaking with color it is completely sans photoshop. Behind the bench I am sitting on there is a huge thick pane of glass and my husband managed to catch at just the right angle to create the work of art.

  14. Oh what a color fix you gave me this morning… thank you! The class sounds great… I’ll watch your blog for more information!

  15. Your pages are great – and I’ll admit I let out an “oooo” at how pretty your student card is! I’m looking forward to seeing your gel medium transfer revealed!

  16. I totally love scraping paint as well…very fun! And congrats on teaching with Connie…sounds like more journaling fun…yay!

  17. I’m following blogs from Michelle’s site – and this is an amazing journey! LOVE your post and your work, I can’t wait to try this myself! Very cool!

  18. The transfer you put over the page is fab, and I actually love the way you put down the paint in sections rather than lengths. Lovely colors you used — what kind of paints are they? xo-teri

  19. Love the look of your card – so much depth. And the pages have turned out great. Huge congrats on your class Hanna.

  20. Hanna – your color palette is to die for. Such awesome layers — you know, the credit card you used (in the first picture) looks pretty cool as art too! Great work. -Kim
