Smuding, scraping and scratching up Art

Today some pages in my Art Journal inspired by other Art Journal Girls. All spreads have links to each of my “inspirations”, images and art that makes me wanna try something myself, that tickles my fantasy, that makes me wanna paint…
Scratch page in black and white, with some images from the altered book peeking through. Inspired by Michelle Ward explaining dirty scraping and by her very cool unfinished pages!
Scratch my Heart out - another b/w journal spread. This in is extremely inspired by Julie Prichard’s centerfold spread. Just like Julie I do looove my dear charcoal pens. Smudge smudge!
Time to travel spread. Still doing stuff on black, trying to finish my tube of black acrylic paint before it dries up. The left page mostly inspired by Teesha Moore and her workshop videos. The doodle inspired by Daisy Yellow’s mandala with Neocolors on black, isn’t it beautiful?

Heart illustration photocopied from a medical book, then colored with water soluble crayons, cut out and glued in. Love those mountains peeking through too.
It has lines. But what to say? Hmm….
I only did two colors here, but I will experiment with this technique on another page later. Michelle Ward says;
- Pour out some gesso and acrylic colors onto a paper plate. Dip your old credit card or scraping device into several colors and drag across the surface. Be light handed and random. Dip and scrape. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Let dry. Do some more. As your surface gets built up with paint you’ll see some terrific textures emerge.

My unfinished page… what focal image could do this background justice? Non I think. So maybe just some charcoal pen writing, or drawing - a monster might like it there perhaps…
Neocolor crayon doodle. I just did it, without thinking to much about what or how - fun! From Daisy Yellow:
- I drew a mandala doodle with neocolors, because the way they pop on black ink is just addictive. Have you tried black gesso yet? Have you tried neocolors on black gesso while sipping a cup of earl grey tea? While avoiding the laundry? What did you skip in order to do art today?

I just love the neocolor on black! I might give it a whirl in my own journal. The background with the mountains is also very fun! Looking forward to seeing what I might come up with :)
I went out and bought black gesso after reading your post. And then saw the neo colors on Yellow Daisy so had to go get myself a box of them. Now the smudgy scraping. I am going to be very busy!! Thank you so much for putting all this together. Yippee!
What a neat idea! Trying on other people’s styles sounds like a fun way of experimenting to find out what suits you best. The scraping technique looks like so much fun, I need to check out her stuff =)

What fun you had making these pages, it is so obvious. And inspirational. going to play now as soon as I throw the chicken and veggies in the slow cooker…allows me all day to play art.
Those are fun pages. All different because of the techniques but similar because they are by you. You infuse them with your essence, your being. (Whoa! That was deep!) I need to play in my art journal today. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yasmina, the face is from some magazine I think. Faces are everywhere, have fun cutting them out and doodling on them. :-)
