The Nine Patch | Collage week 45
Playing around with squares in grids is a fun collage exercise. The grid can be glued down in endless different ways, and it’s the artists prerogative to decide what, when and how to go about each one. It’s really fun to make this kind of art, but not easy. Finding a balance takes a bit of fiddling around with the squares, but to me its satisafctory to see them coming together. And to me these work.

Making this kind of grid is also time consuming. I thought it would be really quick, and need that since I’m still behind, but it’s not.

To make these I created a paper template and held it with the collage paper close, to cut squares from them using my scissors. Each sqare collage consists of nine papers. All of these papers were found in my overflowing scrap inbox.

These collages are nine patches, as we’d say in the quilting world. A grid of nine patches creates a block /artwork.

I am a big fan of grids. How about you?
I like when they’re uniform, but also when there’s something sticking out of the grid, making it irregular:

I know there is a grid excersise in Randel Plowman’s book The Collage Workbook, which I love. Maybe it was there my love story with creative grids started.

Seven new collages this weekend. I hope you are having a good day.

Thank you for clicking over, taking a look and leaving me a comment below telling me which of these nine patch collages you like best – and why you like it. Take care.

I love these and want to try making my own nine patch collage!
Numbers 313 and 314 are my favorites. I love the colors, and how the center bird overlaps, and those hairy eyeballs in the center of 314.
I love these! What a great idea! You make me want to try making some because it looks like fun. Let’s see….my favorite one here is Oceans Nine. I love that you used a dishmatic label – it’s so much fun!
