Go big or go home | Collage week 48

I think the saying “go big or go home” is a bit harsh, but this week I’m going at least a little bigger than usual. Is it a hit? Not yet (for me) but like with everything I think one needs a lot more practice to pull a new art style, form or size off.

They’re not very big, these seven new collages, but bigger than usual like I said, and that’s new.

I had cut out a bigger size of square for my collages earlier this year, maybe during the summer, but then I kept moving those papers further and further back in my to do-pile. I was fearful of “going big”, so I just went “home” to my more comfortable size(s). Cozy squares with little scraps of paper glued to them.

I don’t know if you can tell when looking at these that they’re about double the size as previous collages in the project, but I can tell that I wasn’t as comfortable working on them as I usually am. I kept using my small scraps, adding on and on, and it felt like it was never enough…

332. At dawn and dusk

Although I did get to use some bigger images that I have been wanting to use for a long time. Like this chameleon guy that came from a big book that I altered into an art journal once:

I do think I could get used to this size though, which is 23 x 23 centimeters (about 9×9 inches), and feel that my art practice would benefit from experimenting with it more later on.

And just because you are making a bigger size collage that doesn’t mean you can’t go monochromatic, or skip having a big focal image. You could just use the surface to create chaos, or calmness…

This is one of my favorites, a couple that one can tell has a lot of life experience and knowledge about living well:

Here’s a photo of three collages that I made recently for size comparison:

A square collage from this week, one from week 47 and the smallest grid collage is from week 46 of 2025.

About this project: I am making one collage for each day of the year in 2025 and blogging seven at a time each week here. Thanks for helping me finish this by cheering me on. I appreciate you being here.

  1. the first one with Therese is my favorite!!! I love seeing you play around with these. I need to do it more than 2x a year for postcards.

    • Oh thanks for reminding me who that portraits, Thérèse of Lisieux of course. I had forgotten when using the images because it’s been a while since I cut the images out. :)

  2. I have commented often, but I’ve been admiring your collages & the titles that you’ve given them. I missed some of your posts, so I want to go back to see them. You’re very inspirational!

    • Yes, thank you for following along and leaving me comments Sherry. It means so much to me. Have a great week.

  3. You did great with the larger pieces! I tend to prefer working small, I get intimidated with a larger field.
I like to say that I make “tiny art”.

  4. It’s always a good creative challenge to try a new size or format, isn’t it? I especially like #335. It’s been so fun seeing this series in my Feedly this year! Happy New Year!
