On my desk: Postal Stamp Postcards

I wanted to start using all those cancelled postal stamps I found this summer right away after sorting through them. Sometimes when we (read: I) get unique and fun ephemera we tend to hoard it. We tuck it away into cute boxes and forget we even own it, which is not a good practice at all, right? I mean, even with flat pieces of collage paper or tiny postal stamps – it accumulates. Plus, we brought it home to use it! So I knew straight away that I wanted to start using the little art pieces. I created a couple of mail bliss collages and now I’ve decided to create DIY Postcards with the postal stamps as my collage fodder.

It’s also a good idea to start using your “new” art material so that you get to know it better, and incorporate it into your art time.

I have done this style of postcards earlier, like I mention in the video, but I did not go back to my photos of those postal stamp postcards before starting to create these new ones. So this project did turn out totally different…

Some of these cancelled stamps already went into my 365 collage project this year.

Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there.

I love the rebelliousness of snail mail, and I love anything that can arrive with a postage stamp. There’s something about that person’s breath and hands on the letter.

So far I have only made three postcards in this style, but I love them. They’re like a miniature gallery or maybe a vintage school poster featuring wild and domesticated country animals.

Horse, bear, cow, fox, wolf, squirrel, duck, owl, moose & snow leopard. All so beautiful.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.

  1. I am currently filling a vintage rolodex with postage stamps of all sorts (none are priceless or valuable to a collector). Such fun arranging them and then flipping through the completed cards! Much better than storing them in a box unseen. New or old, domestic or worldwide, they are all interesting (even have friends sending me a few to include).

  2. I love postage and this looks like such a fun project. Mini galleries! Pluse you get to keep them together. Plus you can scan them, print on cardstock, and actually send them – although it might confuse the postage meters LOL!
Welcome to WOYWW! Welcome back? :D
    Happy WOYWW!

  3. Your stamps are all lovely. I must admit to having quite a lot of stamps and forgetting to use them. A great idea. Happy WOYWW. Angela #10
