Using Kindergarten Papers | Collage week 20

This blog post contains seven freshly made collage artworks from this year, as I continue creating in my series “365 collages in 2025”. I hope you like all seven of these new collages! They’re created using simple “color fields”, like abstract paintings where each solid colored paper creates a field that plays of the other papers. They’re simple, but not easy to create and be happy about. I am doing my best though.

The papers I used are mostly thin papers made for paper crafting in 1980s when I was a kid. I think I saved them from my mom’s stash, who worked at a kindergarten back then. They were all pushed together in a plastic sleeve and I was about to throw the whole thing away, thinking “When will I ever use these ugly solid papers that are not even nice to touch?”… But then I changed my mind. Did a 360 and unpacked the papers on my desk, and decided to use a bit of all of them in at least seven new, square collages. Because, why not?

Working with these papers took me right back to childhood, paper crafting at kindergarten with blunt scissors, sitting at a big table with the parents visiting for a Easter or Christmas crafting event perhaps. I mixed in some newer patterned papers to break the monochromatic look, as well as a few tissue bits, a rainbow printer paper and wrinkled up paper to create texture. I don’t love them, but I don’t hate them either. I had fun creating them, and also naming them.

The dark, almost black bits, are actually red metallic paper that did not scan too well. Here it is at an angle to show you how pretty it reflects the light:

Thank you so much for clicking over, taking a look and leaving me a comment below telling me which of these collages you like best – and why you like it.

About this project: I am making one collage for each day of the year in 2025 and blogging seven at a time each week here. I have created 365 artworks in a year thrice before so I am hopeful that I can do it again. I’d love to know which of these you like best – and why you like it. Thanks for helping me finish this by cheering me on. I appreciate you being here.

I came across some of my grade school papers not to long ago and also considered using them in collage. Of this batch, I actually like the photo that was not scanned the best! I’d encourage you to share your collages that way more often! I love being able to see the texture.
Thanks Kelly, I hope you do use the papers you found. It’s so fun connecting back to our younger selves in this way. I’m trying to also take a photo of the process and/or the finished seven art pieces together but it’s a lot of work scanning, documenting and blogging these so I don’t always get to share the additional photos. If I ever make a book of this collage project I’ll include it all of course.
I recently found a stash of these papers when I cleaned up my desk mess.
So fun to see your versions.
