Gazing through the Camera Lens | Collage week 21

I once bought a big stack of vintage magazines, mostly from the 1940s and 50s. They’ve been gathering dust in my studio for far too long now, so I have started to cut them up.

I don’t enjoy cutting them up because it makes me feel sad to destroy these old magazines that have been laying pristine in a pile for decades. It makes me feel like I should scan all the images, preserve them for ever, keep them or turn them into a museum. I have to keep reminding myself : “That’s not your job here Hanna”. You are not paid to archive and preserve Swedish magazine history, and if these were the last copies on earth of these issues, it still wouldn’t be your job to keep them intact. You bought them to use them, so please do. Cut out the images you want to use and discard the rest, without feeling guilty. It’s okay Hanna, you can do it.

So now I’ve started at least. There are plenty left to “destroy”. I went through 2-3 magazines and noticed a lot of camera advertising that I liked, so through the lens of time (and the theme of a camera lens) let’s look at today’s seven new collages made from vintage images.

141. This a Male Space

On brand with the political storm that has been blowing through my art lately (but in a rather breezy, light-hearted way) these became feminist statements once I titled them. On brand, like I said. Not sorry either.

142. The Male Embrace

143. The Male Gaze. Text on the collages says “All fotografering i svartvitt och färg” – All photographing is in black and white and color.

144. Without Meaning. Text in the collage says: “Kamerabild – reportage, reklam, mode, porträtt” – Camera picture – Commentary, advertisement, fashion, portraits.

Then I ran out of camera themed vintage images for the moment, and couldn’t be bothered to search for more to complete the series so I finished with focal images from a school Atlas:

This blog post contains seven freshly made collage artworks from this year, as I continue creating in my series “365 collages in 2025”. I hope you liked them. If you have the time, please leave me a comment below, telling me which of these collages you like best – and why you like it. I always appreciate you for being here, reading and gazing at the art I create. It means a lot. Thanks.

About this project: I am making one collage for each day of the year in 2025 and blogging seven at a time each week here. I have created 365 artworks in a year thrice before so I am hopeful that I can do it again. Please also check out week 21 2013 and week 21 2018 – Beneath the Surface – and leave me a comment if you find a new favorites along the way. I’d love to know which of these you like best – and why you like it. Thanks for helping me finish this by cheering me on. I appreciate you being here.

  1. Wow! Amazing job you did there ! I was wondering if the local library or the editorial kept a record of them ? Like the place (o forgot the name) where old newspapers can be read again?

    • Thank you, and yes, probably you’re right! I sure hope it’s all saved somewhere for future generations. :-)

  2. This is so true. It is no our job to preserve. And thinking back every artist has used old material to create new things. Just think about Rome. build with stones that were already around…
