Sugar Rush | 365 Collages week 23 of 2025

More collages yet again – so sweet I bet they’ll give you a sugar rush. That is, if you too are into neon thread, bright colors, fluffy cotton candy and happy abstract compositions. Today’s batch is like a dive into a big candy bag, but without the tooth ache.

This blog post contains seven freshly made collage artworks from this year (number 155 to 161), as I continue creating in my series “365 collages in 2025”. I hope you like them.

The idea for these sugary and colorful collages came from the sewn paper bits. I guess I made them (many years ago) to use as little journal accents, but then I never reached for them. They’re made from painted aquarelle paper and sewn together with a neon yellow thread. I tried using one piece on each collage. I am so happy that each of these sewn bits now has a permanent home in my art.

The titles are a bit random and without meaning, and I don’t have time today to write down my thought process (if I had any) behind each one, since I did that with my wordsmithing post. But let me just tell you a fun story about two of them. For example, the title of this next one is in French (and I don’t even speak French):

Thanks for the candy, maybe? Looked up the spelling to write a little “thank you” to someone French who left me a comment on a recent YouTube video. Then simply copied the words and titled this one. Quick and easy, but always multitasking right?

And then, as a another serendipitous moment of my art, I came back to our sugar rush with the title of the last one. Unexpectedly. I googled the latin name for the flower (Protea longifolia) that was on the postal stamp illustration by Dick Finley, to get the spelling right and use that as the title for this collage. Not only did I find a few photos of this cool flower, that grows in Africa, and a better sense for how it looks, I learned that in English it is called a “Sugarbush”!

About this project: I am making one collage for each day of the year in 2025 and blogging seven at a time each week here. I have created 365 artworks in a year thrice before so I am hopeful that I can do it again. I’ would really love to know which of these seven collages you like best – and why you like it. Thanks for helping me finish this by cheering me on. I appreciate you being here.

  1. I love numbers 156 and 161 best, especially the lined paper with the bright yellow flowers painted on? I love the flower and straight line combination. The sewn pieces are very cool too. Always inspiring!
