Spotted Photo Theme June: Photo Treassures

Cameras are our treassures, don’t you agree?

To me photography is one of the greatest joys in life, the savior of our time. I have been photographing since I was a kid and inherited my mom’s first point-and-shoot camera. It was a Instamatic I think, with room for a disposable flash that you put in to use once or maybe twice, I don’t remember. The little flash was a glass like material and turquoise, and I never learned to like flash-photos and have been avoiding them as much as I can all through my life. Sometimes I shoot very grainy or blurry photos because I don’t want the harsh flash-light of my built in flash. But no matter what, I keep snapping pictures, almost every day.

I love photography because you get to preserve precious seconds that you’d never remember (or even notice) if you didn’t take that photo. One example is the birthday photo of me from two years ago, when I was about to blow out the few candles that was lit on my cake. I love that photo, the excitement I felt was real, just like when I was a kid. I love how the candles light up my face as I lean in to blow them out. I love how the room looks dark around me because of the small pink cake lights. And I have thousands of photos like that, moments of wonder, amazement and joy. Of every one I have ever loved, some now dead and most of people I no longer am able to spend time with. I want to spend this winter making a few new photo books, on themes, years or people. Those photo books are the true tangible treassures of my life, something I know I get to keep in a world where so much are not ours to keep.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I picked the word “treassures” as the photo theme for Spotted Photo Theme June, but I have been stumped by my choice this entire month, unable to pick photos of any items I love (of which I have many photos) over others, or any photo that would be more precious or hold more treassures than another one. So I picked this photo, of my grandmother’s old Elioflex camera, that I keep in my book shelf in the living room:

Mom’s mom, my grandmother, loved photography just as much as I do. This was one of her older cameras that I now own. An Ferrania Elioflex with two synchronized lenses. I have never used it, but I think it looks beautiful.

I’ll let these photos of mormor’s camera represent my love of family, heirlooms, photography, memory keeping, documenting and all things vintage and wonderful. If you want to see more of my treassures search my blog for “art journaling”, notebooks, thrifted finds, art material, books, beautiful fabrics, paper scraps or pink flowers, just to give you a few examples of my themes and treassures that I share on my blog. :-)

If you feel inspired to share your own treassures, please just jump in and share your own spotted photo theme on your own blog. And could you please let me know where to find your post because I’d love to see it. Yes, please do!

Next month will be easier: toys. We all have them, right? Please say it’s not just me…

  1. It’s so cool that you’re following in a multi-generational tradition. I was given a camera when I was in my teens and have enjoyed taking photos ever since. My brother enjoys photography and is good at it. Most of our early family photos are on slides, but mum and dad got a selection printed when I was about 18 and gave them to each of us. I would love to have a look through the rest of the slides at some time.

I agree that this month was hard but I found a few

    • Thanks for joining again Melissa, I enjoyed your kid’s found treasures. I see that I’ve spelled the theme word wrong (with two s’s), blergh. :(

You can get slides scanned and digitized. I made the ones my dad took of me as a kid into digital files a few years ago, and I absolutely love looking at them. 💕

    • Thanks Michelle, I do appreciate having it although I have many mementos from her around here as well as her big photo collection. 💕

  2. I somehow missed this post. Cameras are treasures too. I have an old camera heirloom from my great grandpa from the early 1920’s. I still have to try to us it and see if it works. I have researched that the specific camera rools are available again so I need to make this project happen.
