Monochromatic Turqouise Page

Turquoise water
The rinse water is colour coordinated after painting another monochromatic page!

Do you remember the Ruby Red Page in my Art Journal? It was so much fun I decided to go on an explore colour a bit more… Time for another almost monochromatic page, this time in turquoise, the colour of 2010.

Turquoise Spread
I have tried out all the different colours of turquoise that I could find around here; crayon, acrylics, deco tape, bits of paper that was in the right colour, and my own try at turquoise mixing;

How do you mix Turquoise?
To make your own turquoise colour you mix white, blue and green together. Isn’t it a beautiful colour?

I like making monochromatic pages, it’s fun! Why not give it a try?

Inspiration Mosaic - June 2010 (Photo by iHanna - Hanna Andersson)

It is the last day of June, and also the last day of the first half of 2010. I have had the January desktop image on my computer background for 6 months, so today I took some time and created a new one. This;

DESKTOP BACKGROUND
You are welcome to download the desktop image and right click to “use as background” if you want to and it feels inspiring to you too. In this way we will stay focused and creative for the next 6 months… hopefully.

Library Book Pockets

My own library pockets (Photo by iHanna - Hanna Andersson)
Let’s make library pockets!

When I made my Owl Journal I mentioned the importance of adding at least one pocket on the inside of each notebook cover. If you don’t have those plastic corners you can make your own Library Book Pockets. I like the old fashioned feel of this form, but you can also use small envelopes or fold your own paper pocket of course!

If you have a pocket in your paper stash carefully take it apart and copy its form to a new paper. Then cut it out, glue it together and adhere to your inside cover. Easy and fun project.

I like to use all kinds of pages for my pockets. Painted papers or cut out leftover pages from altered books, especially if they’ve got fun patterns or illustrations already on them. You could use yellow envelope paper for that authentic library look…

Air Mail

Today it has been raining all day, so a great day for sorting stuff. I have been rummaging around everywhere today, and the dust is thick in the air… Away away with old DVD:s that no one will watch again, VHS tapes, unmarked CD:s, some of my own children’s books from the attic (but saving quite a few still), etc etc. A huge “flea market pile” has been created and the house is even messier than when I started, hehe. It always happens like that. I’m “cleaning” but instead it gets messier… Is it my personality? Though it will end in something great: more space on shelfs and in the attic. I will continue tomorrow.

After that I’ve been resting at my desk making collages all afternoon. I think I’m in love with the new collages, again, I will scan them later for you all to see. My company this week has been Tamara’s voice in a whole series of great podcast shows called Imaginibbles. They are about creativity and I just love them!

Today my company has been Paula Phillips making great art journaling videos all the way in Canada [found via a dirtyfootprint tweet]! I enjoy having “company” when I create, and now the desk setup is perfect because the laptop can be close by and visible but not directly on my messy desk. Oh yeah, my desk is messy to even though it was “cleaned” several times this week…

But what I wanted to show you today was all the goodies I have received this week in the mail box

An Artist Date in town

More embroidery

One day last week was spent with a friend in town. We had lunch, exchanged gifts, talked and laughed - and then went out and looked at pretty spring things that are in the stores now. I had my camera up all the time and snapped a lot of pictures.

Not buying, just looking
A self portrait in every mirror, I guess it’s my way of checking to see if I’m aging… I am.

Roses

I was inspired by all the pretty rose fabrics, spring colours, embroidered details and general shabby chickness. Lastly we went to the book store too, my favorite shop of course. They have yummy pens, journals and a huge shelf with paper back books. I got a very beautiful Frida Kahlo journal from my mom, but I’ll show that one another day. This post is already jam packed with photos, don’t you think?

Photographic Project Inspiration Book

Monday, April 19th, 2010
Book making combines almost all of my passions in life; being visual, inspiring others, planning/thinking of creative adventures, writing text, documenting life and enjoying beautiful smart books in general. It’s all there!
    /iHanna

because 2 is better than 1

I’m reading my own post How to make a Blurb Photo Book published in April last year and I realize I’ve already discussed most of the methods of making a book using InDesign and Blurb there, but never showed you images from inside the Diptych book! It’s for sale at Blurb and I think it’s a great little gem of a book. It would be a great read if you want to do a photographic project together with someone else or as a gift to a friend who is into photography!

Inside the Diptych book

It’s a square book 18×18 centimeter (7×7 inches) with 70 full color pages on premium paper (a 100-pound text silk-finish paper that provides, according to Blurb, stellar image quality)! I wrote a few pages about the project as a foreword in it, and ended with resources and further inspiration - just like a real book!

Inside the Diptych book

An excerpt from my foreword

This book was born out of my need to inspire others as well as myself. In a way this is a small contribution to the world saying it’s possible to sit by yourself at home and still not be that lonely. There are like minded out there. You can reach out, grab someone and ask for friendship. I was lucky this time and was grabbed. I was smart this time, and said yes please.
You don’t have to be single or alone to feel lonely sometimes. As a creative whirlwind and introvert person I know this. It can be a mindset hard to shift.
With this project, for thirty days, I felt that my mind did shift. I couldn’t even meet Sophie but as my brain was occupied with our project I felt the togetherness of a joint venture.
It is a small project yes, but one that reminded me of how much I enjoy everyday photography, creative collaborations and the power of friendship. As you look through the book, I hope you will feel this too.

I then go on to explain how we got started, how we set up our project and what a diptych is and invite the reader to join in and do a similar project.

If you’re shopping at Blurb maybe you would be interested in other books there? I haven’t bought them but if I had money I’d add these to my shopping cart:

  • Number 47 - a personal art journal by Becky New
  • I can’t Apologise Enough - humorous sketches by David Fullarton
  • Me time self published drawings by Danny Gregory
  • Hats for Haiti - silly beautiful self portraits from flickr with people in hats (you can preview the whole book, nice! I love silly portraits like these!)
  • Oh, and don’t forget because 2 is better than 1 - 30 diptychs to inspire creativity by iHanna. Yeah, add this one too! ;-) You can preview it below!

New eyes on Magazine Layout

Magazine layout

Thanks for all your kind comments on my last post about my Blurb book with A Years worth of Photos! Your great comments made my day! Also, I got a few questions that I plan to answer as soon as I can in a Question & Answers post. If you want to know anything about book making please keep adding your questions to that post and I will answer them all.

While making photo books and a zine using InDesign I’ve developed a new pair of eyes. Eyes that see design and layout - everywhere! For example the spreads below. I found them in a magazine from a Swedish eye wear seller. Just fun ads that I am drawn to because of the “art journal style” using photos, black marker and tape:

Tranquilista - a book review

Monday, March 15th, 2010
I like to think of each day as a fresh canvas full of possibility.
    /Kimberly Wilson

I’ve read Kimberly Wilson’s new book Tranquilista: Mastering the Art of Enlightened Work and Mindful Play. I’ve been a fan of this online chica for a long time and I always listen to her new podcasts. Tranquilista book (Mastering the Art of Enlightened Work and Mindful Play) Her podcast show is about creativity, entrepreneurship, self-help and living your yoga, all topics I’m interested in. They are among my favorite to listen to while I create. Her book has the same vibe and feel as her talks and interviews. She has a couple of expressions that is very much her own that are “sprinkled” inside the book. If you listen to her you’ll recognize all those French words, as well as her trademark expressions “savvy sources”, “sassy spirituality”, “divine do-gooding”, living “la vida yoga” and “mindfully extravagant”!

The book is like a light guide to living a good life, a inspirational guide to looking at all the different areas of your life to make them better and more fulfilling. Creativity is a big part of all our lives, both in your work situation and when you’re of the clock or starting a business of your own. Kimberly says that there are numerous ways we can “exude our creativity”:

…from the clothes you wear to the color of the pens you use to the way you organize your files. Simple choices you make every day offer a welcome opportunity to think creatively. Begin to define your life as art - a true masterpiece. You already know you are one of a kind. Now revel in the creation of this magnum opus and consciously design your colorful canvas.

She suggest some ways to celebrate an artist date, find your own modes of creativity and setting up a creative space among other things. A chapter to return to on days when you find nothing inspirational inside.

It’s not a surprise that personal style and make-up essentials are a part of what Kimberly finds important for women, she is a very stylish chica herself. As a twist to the subject she talks about sustainable style and green ways to be stylish which I think is great! Style is not something I’m in to but I still want to look good. I still think style is interesting to think about, and I love experimenting with colorful cloths and second hand fashion.

Tranquilista (Photo by iHanna - Hanna Andersson)

As you can see in my photo I’ve been reading this book while carrying with me my diary and newly bought Shapie pen to make the exercises in the book. (Note: I like writing with the Sharie’s black ink). Kimberly starts of with a chapter on yoga and spirituality, something I want to explore more (all those cool yoga sutras) then goes on to write about aspirations, goal setting and self reflection which is another favorite topic with me. I did the exercises in my diary and learned a few things on the way.

I loved reading the start-up advice and how to set up for a successful workshop, event or launch party, I find these topics inspirational and very useful. Of course Enlightened Work is a big topic in this book, Kimberly is a business woman for sure. She is is a yoga studio owner, designer of eco-fashion called TranquiliT, and the founder of the Tranquil Space Foundation, which promotes yoga, creativity, and leadership in women and girls, and she talks about all of these business in the book! Plus she is a podcaster, yoga teacher, blogger and writer. She uses her own businesses and writing process as examples, and she has weight behind her words.

I think this is a great book that I will place next to I’d rather be in the Studio and Crafting a business on my book shelf. It’s full of inspiration for how to do good in the world, both to yourself (body, soul and heart) and to others. A tranquilista is a woman who embraces her many sides; creative, spiritual and entrepreneurial (calls her own shots!). I’m a tranquilista, are you?
