Exhibition at Nordiska

When my friend Maria came to visit we went to the Summer Craft Exhibition at Nordiska Museet in Stockholm. This year the exhibition is called Wooden Figures. Maria is a woodcraft teacher so of course she wanted to go see it and I was happy to join her. Anything creative gets me going.

Wooden figures

If you are a skilled crafting artist you can make anything in wood:

Amazing sculptures!

These dolls were, together with all the birds, my favorites:

Some of these little figures really got my creative juices going. I want to make my own (don’t I always?)! I wanted to try making wood people and then paint them too. So now I’m planning to buy a knife and start carving… The only thing that is stopping me is my experience of woodcarving from last summer where I cut myself. I did my very own krympburk with the aid of my friend Maria ( I never posted it here!), but now I see blood whenever I imagine myself cutting with a sharp knife… I might not pursue this right now. I do love my fingers as they are. But wood is inspiring, isn’t it?

At lunch Maria borrowed my camera and took this photo of Stockholm from above:

I took this one, can you see all the cute ladies with hats:

If you are in Stockholm this summer, Nordiska museet is a great museum to visit and the carvings we can especially recommend! Big, airy museum filled with Swedish culture, you’ll get everything from vintage embroidery and doll houses to set traditional tables and carved parrots!

I always wonder if I am ever going to
see my son and his family in your photos.

He has been riding his bike to treatments.
He has two more weeks before a rest. His
operation won’t be till September. He still
has hair on his head and a beard. so he hasn’t
lost that. He use to shave his head in summer.

I have a brother that whittles wood into things
    while he is out camping.

Those carvings on the shotguns look cool too.

I’ll have to ask my ds & ddil if they’ve been
to that museum. Look’s like a fun place to go.

    God Bless Your Creative Life!!!

I love wooden carvings… often my family goes skiing in the alps I beg them to bring something back, but it’s really expensive and the younger carvers aren’t that good. I have a fabulous little lion, bear and a cow though… oh, and a really beautiful tiny Madonna. Loved the cow you show here, wish Sweden was a bit nearer ;-)

Lucky you to have Nordiska Museet nearby! Itīs the best craft- and design inspirational museeum I have EVER seen.

I have been there only twice, but I still dream of these visits! Last time two years ago I was there with my teenage daughters - your post makes me remember. And makes me wish to visit Stockholm soon again.

Thanks for pointing to that museum, especially now because in a couple of weeks I will spent one day in Stockholm.
Do you have any recommandations for craft and textile fabric shops?

    Hello from Hamburg

Oh I was up there yesterday! At first I even thought that was me in the picture next to Chaplin, she looks at lot like me. :)
Did you visit the Smoliansky-exhibit? Great one, I highly recommend it!

I try to avoid holding sharp objects myself, but I have great admiration for woodcarvers! It seems like magic to me.

  7. […] Museums in Stockholm I have several favorites even though you don’t go often enough in your own country! Visit the spring exhibit at Liljevalchs (for new art), Nordiska museet where you’ll learn about Sweden’s cultural history (don’t miss the craft part if you’re there in the summer)! And of course for a energy shoot of art go to Moderna museet (modern art and nice shop) and the huge Nationalmuseum (historic and new paintings and sculpture). […]
